The Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail begins in Neil Hawkins Park on the shores of Lake Joondalup and runs through Yellagonga Regional Park, Neerabup National Park and onto Yanchep National Park.  The entire trail is 28km, however can be completed in sections so we're going to hike it from Burns Beach Road to Hester Avenue (Quinns) and return, which is 15km in total.

A little about the trail:

The name Yaberoo Budjara is translated as the land (Budjara) of the people of north of Perth (Yaberoo).  The trail features natural, idigenous and historical significance and is based on the local Whadjuk Noongar elder, Yellagonga and the movement of his people between Lake Joondalup and Yanchep. The Yellagonga people used the chain of wetlands to move away from the coast in winter, returning to the lakes in summer as the inland water supplies dried up. This route was later used as a stock route by Europeans.

The 15km section we're hiking, showcases the plantlife of Neerabup National Park, marri, karri and mixed woodlands, captures views from the top of the limestone ridge across to the Indian Ocean, passes by the 10th Lighthorse Campsite and shows the changes made by limestone quarrying in the area.    The trail is well formed underfoot, compacted limestone with some sandy patches, a few small hills to navigate, so makes for very pleasant walking.  Although the terrain is relatively forgiving, the distance could be testing for those who are not used to bushwalking or hiking.

IMPORTANT: There are no toilets at the beginning or while on this trail, so please come prepared.  We follow the Leave No Trace Principal, so please byo tissues/bag to carry waste out.

MEET POINT / PARKING:  If coming from South of the river - take the Mitchell Freeway North, Burns Beach exit, turn right onto Burns Beach Road toward Joondalup and about 500 metres up the road on the left hand side you will see a small limestone carpark (not marked or sign posted so drive slowly or you may miss it) which is the start of the trail.  MAP LINK - https://goo.gl/maps/MAWks1hwE9pDXqq2A
