This 4-day pack free adventure takes you along the Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk - one of the top 5 walks of Queensland.

The track winds for 54km along the rim of an ancient volcano and through a unique World Heritage Area - Australia’s largest remnant of ancient subtropical Gondwana Rainforests and is why the Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk is so special.  Extending from O'Reilly's past Binna Burra and onto Nerang Creek and Purling Brook Falls, this unique and special region is not to be missed.

We take all the planning out of your trip so you can focus on the experience and you'll only need to carry a day pack. Our base is a 6 bedroom property nestled at the foothills of the Gold Coast Hinterland, we provide return transport from Brisbane to the Gold Coast in a comfortable 12 seater bus with luggage trailer, along with all track transfers for the duration.  You will be accompanied on this adventure by two local AW Guides who will guide, drive, cook and care for you.

Itinerary

Leaving mid-morning in the bus from Brisbane South, we have our first walk together along an easy 1.5 kilometre circuit to the Natural Arch in Springbrook National Park.

The path descends through the ancient Gondwana rainforest to the rock arch with its unique waterfall and rock pool formation. Microbats are often seen in the caves and the area is also home to riflebirds, catbirds, wompoo fruit-doves and rare and threatened species like the cascade tree frog, tusked frog, sooty owl and koala. Hoop pines emerging from surrounding forests are living relics of the Jurassic Age, 180 million years ago. A true gem in the crown of the Gold Coast hinterland. This is also our lunch stop.

We arrive mid afternoon at our accommodation, nestled in the foothills of the Gold Coast hinterland. You have the option to meet us there if you're local and can’t get the day off work. Dinner will be a home cooked meal, accompanied by a glass of champagne to toast in this weekend's adventure.

Meals: Snack, Dinner

Today we transfer you by bus to the beginning of the first section of the Gold Coast Hinterland Walk, more commonly known as The Border Track. It winds for 21.4km between the O’Reilly’s and Binna Burra sections of the Lamington National Park and is the backbone of the Lamington walking track system. Your walk will take you on a discovery of misty forests of 2000-year-old Antarctic beech trees, dense rainforest, stunning waterfalls, panoramic views. It is common to hear the calls of catbirds. lyrebirds, cockatoos and bowerbirds along this part of the track.

We will be met by our bus at Binna Burra and returned to our accommodation.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Dinner

The Aborigines gave this destination the name of Binna Burra - "where the beech tree grows".

The bus will drop us off at the start of his 17.9km section which begins just beneath the Binna Burra campground. We head downwards through beautiful beech tree forests, past gigantic strangler figs and cliff lines of volcanic rock before we branch left on to the Lower Bellbird circuit track.

The landscape changes to dry rainforest, and then, as we continue into the Kurraragin Valley area, we pass through forests of piccabeen palms, large red cedar and graceful flooded gum with the towering form of Egg Rock or Kurraragin (meaning ‘very tall’) appearing through the trees in the distance. According to Yugambeh legend, Kurraragin was a giant who battled the enormous landforms around him to become king of all the mountains.

Numinbah Valley is our stop for the day.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Dinner

After breakfast we pack our bags, then head back to Numinbah Valley for the last leg of this incredible walk. We continue on to the Woonoongoora walkers’ camp, before climbing up 900 steps and past groves of ancient cycads to Apple Tree Park for a toilet break.

The track then winds down to a slippery crossing at Little Nerang Creek, so take care, then climbs up the other side following the creek up to Warringa pool. We will stop here to have morning tea, relax and enjoy the rainforest symphony. Continuing on to Purling Brook Falls, we are greeted by a magical sight - it really is one of the prettiest and spectacular waterfalls in the Springbrook NP. From here we have a steady climb back to the top of the plateau to the Settlement campground - the end of this epic walk.

Back on the bus, we drive to a local winery for a celebratory three course lunch before returning back to Brisbane.
