MAKE A BOOKING

Join Adventurous Women as we retrace the historical Kattamorda Heritage Trail , a 34km point to point walking track starting in Bickley and finishing at Mundaring.

There is plenty of history to explore on this trail and we look forward to sharing it with you.  We've chosen to walk the trail over two days so you can really enjoy the end to end walking experience rather than cramming it into one full day of walking which is unattainable for most.  We've also chosen to include accommodation & going out for the evening meal to support local businesses in the area, while rounding at the whole experience as a weekend away for YOU!

A little history to whet your appetite:  The Indigenous people (traditional custodians of the land) from this region, used a section of this trail as a major route when they moved away from the coast in winter, to the drier open forest and grassland of the east, where food was more plentiful and game could easily be hunted.  Also the trail features sites of significance in the history of the timber, forestry, horticultural and tourist industries, the Goldfields Water Scheme and the area’s natural history.

Itinerary

We head off from Bickley Reservoir and begin our walk along the Mason and Bird Heritage Trail, the horse-drawn tramway which was used to transport timber in the late 1800’s between a sawmill in Carmel to the Canning River.

We continue on and cross the Munday Brook tramway bridge, the oldest surviving all-timber bridge in Australia, then through Korung National Park north of the Victoria Reservoir, passing the 398m Mount Gunjin, once a site of a Forestry Fire Tower Lookout.

Finishing our day at The Dell, we head back to our nearby accommodation to freshen up, before heading out to the Mundaring Pub for a well earned meal together.

Meals: Morning Tea

We being our walk where we left off yesterday at The Dell and head off into Mundaring National Park crossing the Winjan Track, where we retrace 4km of the route once taken by a wooden-railed tramway built in 1908. Sawn timber was carted from the sawmill at the Dell in horse drawn wagons to the trailhead at Mundaring Weir.

After crossing the Helena River we will pass the No. 1 Pumping Station O’Connor Museum then head along the North West side of the weir, continue past Fred Jacoby Park which is home to one of the largest living English Oak trees in Western Australia. This heritage listed tree is 140 years.

We will take a rest stop here before making our way to our final destination where the Kattamorda Trail ends at the Mundaring Sculpture Park.

On finishing our end to end hike on this fabulous heritage trail, we gather together to say our goodbye's ...or some may like to finish up by going for a cuppa in Mundaring, or having a coldie at the Mundaring Pub before returning home.

More Information

Originally named the "Kattamorda" Heritage Trail, it was renamed the "Kattamordo" Heritage Trail in 1998. The word KattaMorda is the Noongar name for the Darling Range, the escarpment that runs from northeast of Perth south to Pemberton, just east of the Swan coastal plain. KattaMorda (pronounced as KattaMoorda) is a word from the Noongar language group, which is made up of 14 Aboriginal "countries."

The pronunciation of a word in the Noongar language can be quite different, depending on the dialect of the people. Whilst "Kattamordo" was thought to represent a more accurate pronunciation, local Whadjuk Noongar advice has been that the Whadjuk people's pronunciation is "KattaMoorda."

This experience doesn't include transport, therefore our guide will coordinate a car shuffle between the beginning and end points for each day.

We had a wonderful weekend celebrating Christmas in July in the Bunya Mountains. We laughed endlessly, ate a lot, drank a little, sang a bit, and also managed to squeeze in some beautiful hikes. Kat and Caron were superb hosts who went above and beyond to ensure we all had a great time.
