Itinerary

Our group will be collected at the airport and transferred to Davies Creek National Park, where we will set up camp for the next two nights.

On arrival at Davies Creek, we set up camp and get organised for our stay here. Our afternoon is at leisure, exploring this beautiful national park, relaxing and swimming in the creek. If time permits (depending upon flight times into Cairns), we may head out on one of the hiking trails.

Camping out should never mean the food isn't great! We will enjoy a camp dinner that will taste even better in the fresh air as the sun sets.

Meals: Dinner

Accommodation: Camping Davies Creek Campground OR Emerald Creek Falls Campground

A delicious breakfast this morning, consisting of cereals, fresh fruits and yoghurt. Whenever possible we work with local providers to showcase the wonderful produce grown on the Tablelands.

After breakfast this morning, we will do the first of our full day hikes - approximately 6 hours in duration.

Lamb's Head and Kahlpahlim Rock Loop is a 12.6 kilometre occasionally trafficked loop trail located near Mareeba, in far north Queensland, that offers the chance to see wildlife and enjoy some great views. This is not a technical or extremely difficult hike, but good fitness is required.

Length 16km Elevation gain 721m

After a strenuous hike today, the afternoon is spent at your leisure. You may wish to take a swim in the refreshing creek, read a book or relax with other group members .....Or you might want to take a nap! The afternoon is yours to do with as you please.

Tonight we will climb into the bus and travel to a local restaurant for dinner. This will also give us the opportunity to see a little more of this beautiful region. (own cost)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Camping Davies Creek Campground OR Emerald Creek Falls Campground

This morning we will break camp and help pack all tents & equipment into the support vehicle. After breakfast we will set out on our hike.

Davies Creek to Crystal Cascades is a 20.9 kilometre lightly trafficked point-to-point trail located near Mareeba in far north Queensland, that features a waterfall and is rated as moderate.

This quiet trail has several river crossings through eucalypt forests and rainforests of Dinden National Park. It is accessible year-round.

We complete our trek at Crystal Cascades in Cairns, where we have the opportunity for a cooling swim in the creek.

Length 20.9k Elevation loss- 732m

We then head back to Cairns and it's straight onto the Ferry and off to Fitzroy Island where we'll spend the next two nights. Staying here for two nights provides a wonderful opportunity to really soak up this beautiful and remote resort. In addition to the hotel restaurant, there is also a small store and Foxy’s Café which offers a games area and nightly music.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Fitzroy Island Resort

After breakfast a yummy breakfast this morning, we will start exploring the pristine Fitzroy Island. A fringing coral reef surrounds the island, part of the inner Great Barrier Reef, providing a sheltered home for a variety of fish and coral species.

Marine Science and Snorkelling: Our marine biologist will talk to us about some of the basic fish and coral types we will be observing in the water. After a safety brief, we will take to the water with our snorkel gear to experience the reef for ourselves. Our marine guide will lead us to underwater examples of some of the reef’s most interesting features, including among other things giant clams, spaghetti coral that waves in the current, lion fish, cuttle fish, colourful coral gardens and fluorescent parrot fish.

Coral Watch Data Collection and Water Quality Testing: Part of our education today covers reef biodiversity, and with our marine biologist we will collect data on coral bleaching. Using the University of Queensland’s waterproof Coral Watch slates, we will learn how to identify different types of coral and how to record signs of bleaching, contributing to the Coral Watch database.

We will learn to measure water quality using chemical tests with our guide. Each group visiting the island, collates the water quality results to assist in analysis of results and trends over time.

Our evening meal will be at the relaxed Foxy's Bar, a short walk from our hotel.

Foxy’s has an excellent casual café style food menu and provides a wide range of beers, wine and soft drinks plus a cocktail menu and the essential cappuccino!

Right next to the beach, Foxy's also offers great sunset views, pool tables, a big dance floor and big sports TV. They have Happy Hour daily from 3-4pm and 8-9pm on Friday & Saturday evenings.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Fitzroy Island Resort

An early breakfast in the hotel's Zephyr Restaurant to ensure we make the most of our limited time here.

Lighthouse Hike: Our day begins with a steep but relatively short rainforest track that gives way to dry open forest and scenic vistas. At trail's end stands an historic lighthouse where views of the sparkling Coral Sea stretch to the horizon. For an extra challenge, we will push on to the summit of the island for 360-degree views.

Snorkel Time: More snorkelling sessions today, providing the opportunity to explore more sites, including - hopefully - observing wild green turtles.

Turtle Rehabilitation Centre: We will also visit the island’s Turtle Rehabilitation Centre where a collection of volunteers help save sick and injured sea turtles by looking after them until they are ready to be released back into the ocean.

Reef Restoration Project Overview: Reef Restoration Foundation is a not-for-profit social enterprise that is establishing offshore nurseries at Fitzroy Island. The project aim is to accelerate the recovery of damaged reefs, and strengthen resilience to future bleaching events. The process mimics nature and allows damaged reefs to reopen faster.

We will receive an overview of how the project has been established at the island and the success story so far. Our local partner operator has sponsored one of the ‘coral trees’ that is a part of the coral nursery, and is proud to be involved with this first off breakthrough solution within Australia.

On or return to Cairns, settle into the hotel and freshen up to enjoy another night on this beautiful Marina - If there was a restaurant we missed out on earlier, we have another opportunity to sample it tonight (own cost)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Shangri-la Hotel

After a hearty breakfast, it's time to pack up and check out, bidding farewell to our group leaders & new found friends.

What a great weekend - such a lovely friendly group of ladies. And Jazzy our guide was wonderful as usual. But what did I like the most? It was that I learnt stuff. I had never heard of Dryandra before, I hadn’t heard of half the animals we saw, and I saw a Bilby for the first time ever (I just thought they were an Easter chocolate).

Lastly the food was fantastic, as it always is. Thanks everyone.

Oh and I loved the cute cottages we stayed in. Wooden floor boards are just the best.
