Itinerary

Our group will be collected at the airport and transferred to Davies Creek National Park, where we will set up camp for the next two nights.

On arrival at Davies Creek, we set up camp and get organised for our stay here. Our afternoon is at leisure, exploring this beautiful national park, relaxing and swimming in the creek. If time permits (depending upon flight times into Cairns), we may head out on one of the hiking trails.

Camping out should never mean the food isn't great! We will enjoy a camp dinner that will taste even better in the fresh air as the sun sets.

Meals: Dinner

Accommodation: Camping Davies Creek Campground OR Emerald Creek Falls Campground

A delicious breakfast this morning, consisting of cereals, fresh fruits and yoghurt. Whenever possible we work with local providers to showcase the wonderful produce grown on the Tablelands.

After breakfast this morning, we will do the first of our full day hikes - approximately 6 hours in duration.

Lamb's Head and Kahlpahlim Rock Loop is a 12.6 kilometre occasionally trafficked loop trail located near Mareeba, in far north Queensland, that offers the chance to see wildlife and enjoy some great views. This is not a technical or extremely difficult hike, but good fitness is required.

Length 16km Elevation gain 721m

After a strenuous hike today, the afternoon is spent at your leisure. You may wish to take a swim in the refreshing creek, read a book or relax with other group members .....Or you might want to take a nap! The afternoon is yours to do with as you please.

Tonight we will climb into the bus and travel to a local restaurant for dinner. This will also give us the opportunity to see a little more of this beautiful region. (own cost)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Camping Davies Creek Campground OR Emerald Creek Falls Campground

This morning we will break camp and help pack all tents & equipment into the support vehicle.

After breakfast , we will then start our first hike - a very enjoyable meander through varied vegetation leading to a rock feature known as Turtle Rock.

The trailhead begins over flat ground before a steady and reasonable climb to the rock. One section does require a one move scramble up rock but is certainly not a vertical rock climb - and it is this that has created the 'difficult' rating.

The eastward path down is shaded by sheoaks and a creek crossing before joining the road, makes for a wonderful place to cool off towards the end of the hike. Length 6.4km Elevation gain 303 m

We then head back to Cairns and it's straight onto the Ferry and off to Fitzroy Island where we'll spend the next two nights. Staying here for two nights provides a wonderful opportunity to really soak up this beautiful and remote resort. In addition to the hotel restaurant, there is also a small store and Foxy’s Café which offers a games area and nightly music.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Fitzroy Island Resort

After breakfast a yummy breakfast this morning, we will start exploring the pristine Fitzroy Island. A fringing coral reef surrounds the island, part of the inner Great Barrier Reef, providing a sheltered home for a variety of fish and coral species.

Whilst staying on Fitzroy Island enjoy a day out on the Moore Reef Pontoon, where we will enjoy 4 hours at the reef featuring an impressive array of complimentary inclusions such as snorkelling, glass bottom boat and semi-submersible coral reef viewing tours, an underwater observatory, marine life touch tank, and a delicious tropical lunch box.

Our evening meal will be at the relaxed Foxy's Bar, a short walk from our hotel.

Foxy’s has an excellent casual cafe style food menu and provides a wide range of beers, wine and soft drinks plus a cocktail menu and the essential cappuccino! Right next to the beach, Foxy's also offers great sunset views, pool tables, a big dance floor and big sports TV. They have Happy Hour daily from 3-4pm and 8-9pm on Friday & Saturday evenings.

(dinner own cost)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Fitzroy Island Resort

An early breakfast in the hotel's Zephyr Restaurant this morning to ensure we make the most of our limited time here.

We have a full day here today, to enjoy and soak up what Fitzroy Island has to offer. You may choose to attend a bush tucker & nature walk, educational talks about various subjects including:

Reef Restoration

Wonders of the Great Barrier Reef

Sustainability at Fitzroy Island

OR - get out on the water, with a variety of options available to you, including single & double kayaks, snorkelling, stand up paddle boarding, and of course, just enjoying splashing around in the water.

Or - you can lie by the pool and read a book! The choice is yours.

1:00 pm - Optional - visit to Turtle Rehabilitation Centre

You may find yourself asking, why would turtles need rehabilitation? Truth be told it’s not just for the rich & famous and daily talks at the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre allow people to learn about not only the history of the organisation but also the journey to recovery that injured or sick turtles undergo whilst at this Centre, prior to their release back into the ocean.

Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre on Fitzroy Island (CTRC) is a volunteer operated, non-profit organisation dedicated to the rehabilitation of sick and injured turtles. The Great Barrier Reef is home to six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles. A number of these are seriously threatened by a diverse range of natural and, more significantly, human induced factors.

5.00pm We board to ferry for our transfer to Cairns

On or return to Cairns, settle into the hotel and freshen up to enjoy another night on this beautiful Marina - If there was a restaurant we missed out on earlier, we have another opportunity to sample it tonight (own cost)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Shangri-la Hotel

After a hearty breakfast, it's time to pack up and check out, bidding farewell to our group leaders & new found friends.

I absolutely loved the walk . I had no expectations as it was my first walk with AW but it was so good in every way. The accommodation was great , the food was excellent ,the guides were wonderful and so caring .

I can't think of any way it could be improved , except maybe having another place to stay in between the swan valley and New Norcia ,as it was a long drive back the last couple of days .
