THE SOUTH AUSTRALIAN EXPERIENCE

Located forty minutes South of Adelaide, the Fleurieu Peninsula offers some of South Australia’s finest coastal scenery. With its stunning landscape of rolling hills, farmland, national parks and vineyards, fringed on two sides by pristine sandy beaches and rugged coastlines, the Fleurieu Peninsula is a place that offers the perfect blend of indulgence, culture and outdoor adventure.

For five days you will walk this magnificent coastline and explore its natural surrounds. You may be rewarded with dolphins, seals and whales that often play off this stretch of coast, while being fully supported and catered for (NO HEAVY BACKPACKS)

THE TRACK

Starting at Cape Jervis and finishing 5 days later in Victor Harbour, a typical of day walking takes approximately 5–7 hours depending on the weather and the speed of the group.  The terrain is undulating, rough and steep in sections.  With a long lunch break and many stops along the way, this walk is achievable for those with a good general level of base fitness and a willingness to prepare themselves (train) to help manage hilly terrain.   Prior bushwalking experience is desirable.

Itinerary

We start today with an early pick up from our Adelaide pick up point (central to CBD)

It’s an easy one and half hour drive in our private bus to Cape Jervis. After a gear sort, briefing and tying up the boots, we are off!! From the Cape Jervis trailhead, this section follows sandy coastal tracks and exposed coastal hillsides, providing spectacular views over Backstairs Passage to Kangaroo Island. Walkers are often rewarded with sightings of seals and dolphins. At Blowhole Beach the trail enters Deep Creek Conservation Park to begin the long climb through native bushland to Cobbler Hill.

WALKING DISTANCE: 12 km, 5-7 hours

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Although a relatively easier day, this section of the trail offers spectacular scenery, passing an optional side trip to Aaron Creek, through a cool fern-filled gully to the hikers-only Eagle Waterhole Campsite. There is a shelter here with sleeping platforms, picnic tables and water. Today also includes a magnificent waterfall, as we follow narrow tracks through the dense native scrub of Deep Creek Conservation Park.

WALKING DISTANCE: 15km, 6-7 hrs approx

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

A picturesque section highlighting the diversity of the Heysen Trail, walkers traverse native bushland, a long sandy beach, lush farmland and some very memorable hills. Photo opportunities abound, and you might even spot a whale. Experience glimpses of the coast on the Boat Harbor Hike, descending down to the rocky boat harbor beach. Watch out for pods of dolphins from the lookout above Boat Harbor.

From Boat Harbor the trail passes over rocky headlands before a long beach walk along Tunkalilla Beach, followed by a steep ascent. A quiet country road here leads to the Balquhidder Campsite, a secluded campsite nestled at a y-junction of two creeks.

WALKING DISTANCE: 15km, 7 hrs approx

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Picturesque farmland, unspoilt sandy beaches, rocky headlands and the chance to spot whales characterise this section of the Trail today.

We descend back down to the coast across remote farmland and creeks. The trail passes along a series of headlands and remote beaches before emerging at Parsons Beach and its carpark, continuing along Waitpinga Beach, over the sand dunes into the Waitpinga Campsite. There is a picnic area here with a shelter and BBQ, and campsites with toilets.

WALKING DISTANCE: 15km, 6 - 8 hrs approx

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

This is a real highlight section of the Heysen Trail. The trail ascends Ridgeway Hill before heading out to the coastal cliffs, passing unique sea eagle nesting areas and the spectacular cliffs of Newland Head. Past the cliffs, the trail emerges onto Kings Beach.

The main Heysen Trail turns north here, heading on to Inman Valley (the trail is 1,200km long to the Flinders Ranges), but a spur trail continues along the coast on the Victor Harbor Heritage Trail, past Petrel Cove to the Bluff, continuing past Whalers Way along the esplanade at Encounter Bay to Kent Reserve, near central Victor Harbor.

We will meet our transport and head back to Adelaide. The drive takes a little over 1 hour and we will finish up at the drop off point in Adelaide.

WALKING DISTANCE: 17km, 5 - 7 hrs approx

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

This tour by it's very nature is not designed for the 5 Star Traveller. It is for the girl who has an 'adventurous spirit' and is looking for a unique and rewarding 'experience'.  It is a camping trip (not in caravan parks, but in campgrounds with no showers and long drop toilet facilities except for one, where it's dig and fill.)  However you have your own personal tent, so no sharing and camp set up/pack down is all done for you, along with a nice hot cooked meal being prepared for you every evening.

Adventurous Spirit - Swan River Paddle Middle Swan WA

Another fantastic AW activity. Such fun to explore an area of the Swan River that is not well known or easily accessed and the ‘scrambling’ over a range of obstacles just added to the enjoyment and the challenge. Leonie, from Water Wanderers Wanderers, excelled herself with our picnic lunch and her enthusiasm for our river adventure.
