Walking with friends at night is one of life's most underrated pleasures. Our city takes on a whole new character - everything looks different, the harsh glare from the sun is replaced with the warm colours of sunset and the glow of the moon and stars. As the lights come on in the homes along the river we are offered a path of fairy lights to guide us along the way.
This Friday we are changing the brief. We are losing our hiking kits and grabbing our walking shoes for an after-hours social walk along the Brisbane River. With the working week behind us, the cool breeze in our hair, we will chat, laugh, breathe & enjoy the beauty our city has on offer.
We will start by walking through New Farm Park and make our way past patrons enjoying "Sunset drinks" at the Powerhouse. This wide boardwalk towards Teneriffe takes us past low-rise apartments and historical sites. we continue on to Newstead House waterfront estate with its manicured old-world gardens, ornate rotunda with a war memorial on the front lawn.
It is here that the river joins Breakfast Creek, and we join the new walkway along Kingsford-Smith Drive - the Lores Bonney Riverwalk. This new stretch of riverwalk offers up water fountains, sculptures, glimpses in the grand historic mansions and wonderful river views.
The Belvedere Bar and Grill at Portside is our halfway mark. Here we may indulge in a sneaky cold beverage so don’t forget your wallet. It is your choice if you want to walk back or stay a little longer for a bite to eat (optional) then perhaps catch a CityCat at Bretts Wharf back to the start. Night time on the river is just magical!
