Wungong Gorge is an interesting place with the now damned Wungong Creek carving a pretty steep chasm into the granite over a very long time.  We take you on a lesser known walking trail during prime wildflower season here in WA - sure to be a highlight.

The two sides of the gorge rise 200m above the path that snakes next to Wungong Creek and views from the top of the hills and bottom of the gorge are equally as impressive. The north side has an abandoned quarry and the sheer granite rock faces, high above to the North, are regularly climbed by avid rock climbers. We pass an old shale quarry mined in the 1960’s. This rock occurs in a narrow band along the edge of the Darling Scarp. Large broken boulders mark the edge of an old granite quarry site where this rock was mined for the building of the Garden Island Causeway.

As we wander through the gorge making our way to the Wungong Dam, we can see the beginnings of a carpet of wildflowers emerging from the undergrowth. Keep an eye out for the rare Red-eared Fire tail Finch. The Wungong Dam, completed in 1979, stands majestically in the distance. The dam stretches 5.8kms in length with a reservoir capacity of 60 billion litres. We’ll take a short steep climb up to the top of the dam wall for a breathtaking view out over the dam.  Below the dam we find the Wungong Recreation Lake, a popular picnic and water recreation area, especially for model boat enthusiasts. We will stop here to relax and enjoy our morning tea before following the Wungong  Brook back through the gorge to our starting point.

The trail & Style of Walk: 15km in length, MEDIUM Grade Walk. There is one long steep climb on an asphalt road up to the dam, otherwise, a "ramble” and we anticipate a total of 5-6 hours including morning tea, lunch and breaks along the way.

MEETING POINT/DIRECTIONS:

From Armadale, head south on the South Western Hwy.  South Western Highway Approx. 400 metres PAST the 2nd Rails Crescent entry sign on left, look out for the Wungong Regional Park sign and the large metal leaves on the pole. There is a gravel parking area along side the road with plenty of space next to the sign and it's where our AW Guide will be waiting for the group.  She'll be wearing a bright orange AW Cap. DO NOT GO TO THE DESIGNATED PARKING AREA ... YOU MUST DRIVE ON 400 METRES PAST IT

What a lovely weekend. I was only able to complete two days of the walk due to a knee injury, but the two days I walked the scenery was beautiful. Lovely soft leafy ground underfoot. A really pretty area of WA. As usual our AW guides were absolutely wonderful. And the food was fantastic (Brads Jam drop biscuits were perfect). The accomodation was very nice and perfectly situated so that I still had close access to Pemberton town on the days I could not walk.

A great couple of days on the Kattamorda Heritage Trail. Found the first day trek relatively easy despite the distance and the second day was surprisingly interrupted with lunch at the Mundaring Weir Hotel. Our guide, Imogen, was great very inclusive and nothing was any trouble, thank you Imogen for a great weekend.

This was a fabulous city walk. I grew up in Perth all my life and I discovered places and things on this walk that I never knew existed. Jazzy is just amazing, full of knowledge and patience and just a fabulous host. Thank you for an amazing day. And I loved Brads biscuits, which are always a highlight for me.
