MAKE A BOOKING

When most people think of an African wildlife safari, they turn their attention to the ultimate safari destination, East Africa. Between Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and its adjacent neighbour, the Maasai Mara National Game Reserve in Kenya, these areas are highly sought after and with good reason! They protect the greatest and most varied collection of terrestrial wildlife on earth and have one of the last great migratory systems still intact. This migration also puts it at the top of the list of best safaris in Africa, particularly during if visiting between August and October.

As well as our AWesome 4 x 4 Game Drives, we take in the enormity of Africa's largest Lake, Lake Victoria.  We also swap out animals for people, as we spend time with the Maasai people, learn about their ancient traditions and more modern way of life from an elder.  Then in Nairobi we visit a street market and haggle alongside locals for pigs and chickens before delivering these sustainable food sources to villages on the outskirts of Nairobi, sitting down in a local's home afterwards for a cuppa and learning about life in Kenya.

Upon arrival in the late afternoon / evening (note : if flying Qatar Airways on current 2019 timetables expected flight arrival time is 13:55 **subject to change} ) you will check in to the hotel. The rest of the day is then free to spend at your leisure, re-grouping in the evening to enjoy your first group meal together.

Included airport transfer is based on a minimum of 2 travellers from airport.

Meals: None included

Accommodation: Masai Land Safari and Lodge or Similar

Today you will meet our Adventurous Women host, who will have just finished climbing Mount Kilimanjaro with our group of climbers. She (along with others who have extended their time in Africa to join in the safari) will be making their way from Moshi to meet you all in Arusha, then you'll all continue together by road for approximately 3 hours, to Karatu. Upon arrival in the late afternoon/evening you will check in to the lodge and the rest of the day is then free to spend at your leisure.

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Accommodation: Safari Lodge or Similar

Today we will be exploring the world renowned Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest inactive, unbroken and unfilled volcanic caldera, boasting some of the most fertile and richest grazing ground in Africa. The Ngorongoro Crater is breathtakingly beautiful, often referred to as the 'Garden of Eden' and is the best place in East Africa to see the BIG FIVE up close and personal!

Afterwards we enter the Serengeti and take in another game drive en route to our camp. The wide-open plains of the Serengeti green after the rains are home to thousands of hoofed animals and fierce predators. Flat and rolling, with long grass and acacia trees, these plains get their name from the Maasai word Siringet – 'The place where the land moves on forever'. Tonight we'll be treated to a true African safari experience, camping in an unfenced site within the national park, right in the heart of the animal action. Your leader will give you a full safety briefing once you arrive.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Permanent Tented Camp

We're up early for a game drive at dawn to see the animals while they are at their most active, then head back to camp for brunch around 11.00am. We'll spend the warmer part of the day relaxing (as the animals do), before heading out again at dusk for another adventure through the wild! Returning back to camp for dinner and to enjoy another beautiful evening relaxing under the Serengeti Stars.

Optional Activity: There's also the option of a balloon ride over the park today - Cost From USD599 if pre-booking prior to our departure. If you have pre-booked this activity you will be picked up before dawn and driven to the launch site. After a safety briefing, you will glide through the dawn, sometimes at tree height, which provides amazing photo opportunities. After landing, you'll be treated to a five-star bush breakfast, then be returned to your camp. The balloon ride is offered as a pre-booked service which will guarantee you a place. If you would rather wait and try to get a better price by booking this optional activity locally on the ground, you're welcome to but please keep in mind that this is a popular activity and places are limited.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Permanent Tented Camp

Enjoy a final game drive through the Serengeti this morning before we exit the park and head for the Tanzania – Kenya border and to the shores of Lake Victoria (approximately 7–8 hours). This is not only Africa's largest lake – it's the largest tropical lake in the world. Its shores are shared by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. There are plenty of activities to choose from while you're here. You might like to hire a bicycle and explore the lake's surrounds (you'll need to bring your own helmet if you want to wear one), or you can visit an African marketplace for a chance to interact with the people of Musoma. You can also just simply chill out on the lakeside enjoying a cold drink and watching the world go by!

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Comfortable Mid-Range Hotel

After breakfast at the hotel, we check out and drive to Maasai Mara. This is one of the best game reserves in all of Africa and on the way, we stop in at Loita Hills, a remote region that's home to the traditional Maasai people. Known for their colourful jewellery and bright red dress, the Maasai are an ancient ethnic group and a local elder will give a fascinating talk full of insights into this incredible culture. We'll be shown around a traditional Maasai home and their cattle enclosures before continuing to the outskirts of the Masai Mara, where our permanent tented camp can be found. The Maasai Mara is the quintessential African experience, with sparse open plains, dramatic skies and some of the world's most tremendous animals. Here lies arguably one of the finest game reserves on the continent. On today's game drive, we could have the good fortune to observe a black-maned lion, leopard or a cheetah. These predators find an abundant food supply in the massive herds of wildebeest, zebra, Thomson's and Grant's gazelle, all of which roam these verdant grasslands during the fame and fated annual migration occurring in this area between June and November.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Accommodation: Permanent Tented Camp

We rise a little before dawn to begin our morning game drive. As the sun rises, we won't have any trouble spotting wildlife, as this is often one of the most active times of the day for animals. Depending upon wildlife movements, we may keep going and make for a one full day game drive, breaking along the way for breakfast and lunch. If wildlife movement drops off as the day warms up, we may return to camp for lunch and relaxation before heading out again late in the afternoon. Today's activities will be dependent on the 'animals' so our guide and 4 x 4 driver will keep us advised of what our movements will be.

**Optional Activity: An optional balloon ride over the Masai Mara (Approx USD500 if pre booked) at sunrise is highly recommended and is an unforgettable experience for many travellers. Enjoy a balloon ride over the Mara, gliding through the dawn, sometimes at tree height, enjoying amazing photo opportunities. Upon landing you'll be treated to a bush breakfast before returning to our vehicle for the game drive. This is a popular activity with limited places so it's offered as a pre-booked activity which guarantees you a place. If you choose to wait and book this activity locally on the ground, you may risk missing out on a place.

Accommodation: Comfortable Mid-Range Hotel

After enjoying a sumptuous breakfast at the hotel, we take part in a unique experience called "From Farm to Feast" During this experience we explore the relationship between farming and food, deliver a supply of chickens and pigs to a local community and find out how a local non-profit organisation is helping to alleviate poverty and malnutrition in Kenya, one chick and piglet at a time. We haggle alongside locals for pigs and chickens at the street market, deliver our supply to a local community, then sit down in a local home for tea and coffee and learn about life in Kenya and the challenges these communities face. This experience is included in our itinerary and the costs we've paid for you to participate will go to supporting nutrition efforts in local communities. Once we've said our goodbye's to the community, we drive back to the hotel with rest of the afternoon and evening at leisure. There are plenty of optional activities you can book to do, or simply use the afternoon to relax.

Is this trip right for you?

Camping in the Serengeti National Park with no barriers between you and the animals is amazing, but it's important to heed the safety advice of your leader. You'll be briefed on arrival. This is an overland trip, that means you’ll be travelling in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities and getting the best possible views of the ‘big five’.  While the driving days can be lengthy, it's all about the journey, the amazing sightseeing opportunities and the fun / camaraderie of the group. You need to understand that to get the best out of a safari trip, driving long distances is required, so please keep this in mind before booking.  There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.
