Sydney is one of those cities we think we know. We know the Opera House. We know the Harbour Bridge. We know Bondi and Manly. We've caught the ferry across the harbour, watched the sun go down over the water and probably walked a few of the city's famous coastal paths.
But Sydney has another side and you're far more likely to discover it on foot. Away from the postcard attractions are quiet harbour coves, pockets of rainforest, grand old homes, secret gardens, native bushland and beaches tucked between the suburbs.

Our Sydney Harbour Pack-Free Hiking journey is proof that you don't need to travel far to have an adventure. Sometimes you just need to slow down, leave the familiar path and see somewhere you think you know from a completely different perspective.
Over four hikes, we explore four very different corners of Sydney Harbour, linking together some of the city's most beautiful landscapes with plenty of places most visitors - and even locals - simply never see.
Here's a closer look at our hidden Sydney adventure:

Day 1: Explore the North Harbour - 6 km
We ease into the adventure with a walk along a beautiful stretch of harbour coastline dotted with small yachts and framed by magnificent stands of Sydney red gums. Our walk takes us by Athol Beach and Bradleys Head, past a historic lighthouse, old military fortifications and the mast of HMAS Sydney, a memorial to sailors lost at sea.
From WWII history we continue our journey through time at Chowder Bay, once a 19th-century whaling station and later a naval base. A climb to Georges Heights will reward us with sweeping views over Middle Harbour, out to Manly and the Harbour entrance. The day finishes at Balmoral Beach, considered by many to be Sydney's prettiest harbour beach.

Day 2: From harbour to ocean - 13 km
Day two brings a little more drama. We walk through some of Sydney's most exclusive suburbs before heading into Sydney Harbour National Park, where leafy streets give way to native bushland, harbour beaches and secluded coves. If time allows, there may even be a chance for a swim.
Eventually, the harbour opens towards the Pacific and we reach Watsons Bay and the dramatic cliffs of The Gap. Then we finish the day the very Sydney way: boarding a ferry for a spectacular ride back across the harbour.

Day 3: The city's hidden backstage - 10 km
This is the day for discovering the Sydney that doesn't make the standard sightseeing itinerary. We explore reclaimed industrial spaces now transformed into green, wildlife-friendly landscapes, with the city skyline providing a constant backdrop.
There's a visit to the wonderfully unexpected Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden, before we finish by walking across the Harbour Bridge. It's a day full of contrasts: industrial and natural, urban and wild, familiar and completely unexpected.

Day 4: Sydney gets wild - 10 km
Our final day is the wildest, taking us into proper coastal bushland where native heath, wildflowers and birdlife replace the city streets. We'll discover secluded beaches, turquoise coves and elevated lookouts with sweeping views across Middle Harbour.
Eventually we arrive in lively Manly, where there's time to enjoy the atmosphere before one final harbour journey aboard the famous Manly ferry. After four days of seeing Sydney from every possible angle, it's a fitting way to finish.

All you have to do is walk
Four days, four different sides of Sydney and through it all, one comfortable hotel as your base. No checking in and out of a new room each night. Just wake up, lace up your boots and head out to discover another corner of the harbour.
It's four walking days back to back, with up to 13 km in a day, so it's worth building up your stamina beforehand - that cumulative effort is where the challenge sits rather than any one hill.
You won't be walking it alone, either. You'll be joined by a group of like-minded women who share your love of adventure, plus a local guide who brings the city's history and hidden highlights to life at every turn. Your AW Tour Leader is with you the whole way, taking care of the details so all you need to think about is putting one foot in front of the other.
It's the perfect combination: real adventure and genuine discovery, without ever sacrificing comfort or connection. By the time you board that final Manly ferry, you won't just know Sydney, you'll have walked it and shared it with new friends along the way.
