"Great day, learning new skills of kayaking, distance wasn't too far so a great introduction if you've never done this type of activity before"
Explore Yanchep National Park on the Ghost House Trail, a varied 12.5km loop through wetlands, tuart forest and bushland. This hike combines beautiful scenery, local history and plenty of wildlife.
Starting along the boardwalk beside Loch McNess, the trail winds through wattle, flowering shrubs and, hopefully, spring orchids, with a mix of forest tracks, sandy and rocky sections and gentle climbs and descents.
Around halfway, we’ll reach the Ghost House, the remains of a 1930s holiday cottage, where just the verandah, doorway and some foundations remain. We’ll stop here for a snack before continuing through the bush, past limestone caves and structures, a golf course and two WWII-era bunkers.
There are plenty of opportunities to spot wildlife along the way, particularly kangaroos, which are so accustomed to visitors they’ll often continue grazing as we walk past. After the hike, there’s the option to join Effi at the Yanchep Inn for a well-earned refreshment and chat. (Drinks and snacks at own expense.)
This is a Grade 3 (moderate) 12.5km hike with a mix of gentle climbs, descents and flatter sections. It’s suitable for active women who are comfortable walking continuously for several hours on varied terrain.
