"Loved every minute of the trip! Organisation was great, tour leader (Jazzy) was fabulous, and the other women on the walk were just lovely"
Experience the very best of New Zealand's Southern Alps on this 8-day trekking adventure. From alpine huts and glacial valleys to turquoise lakes and mountain villages, every day brings another unforgettable hike and spectacular scenery.
Experience New Zealand's Southern Alps at their very best, from turquoise lakes and towering peaks to glacial valleys and charming towns. This adventure is built around rewarding treks, climbing to heights of nearly 2,000 metres where breathtaking alpine landscapes await.
Designed for women who enjoy a good challenge, this itinerary blends two worlds: remote alpine huts and demanding hikes, paired with comfortable stays in New Zealand's most beautiful settings.
We begin with two nights in a private alpine hut overlooking Lake Tekapo, waking to sweeping mountain views and falling asleep beneath some of the world's clearest skies. From there, we explore the dramatic landscapes of Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park, spend time in the lakeside town of Wānaka and take on iconic hikes including Mueller Hut and Ben Lomond.
With experienced guides and a group of like-minded women alongside you, every day brings spectacular scenery, shared achievement and adventure in some of New Zealand's most remarkable mountain landscapes.
Note: This trip pairs with our Abel Tasman Pack-Free Hiking trip starting on 01 December from Nelson, New Zealand.
This trip is designed for women with a good level of fitness who enjoy challenging days on the trail. Expect hikes of up to 6-8 hours, with steep climbs, uneven alpine terrain and consecutive days on the trail as well as two nights in simple accommodation. Advanced training is required to build up the necessary stamina.
While you won't carry your main luggage on your back, you'll need to carry a daypack each day, and on days 2 & 4 you'll also carry your overnight gear, including clothing, toiletries and other essentials for your stay in the alpine hut.

After breakfast we leave Christchurch behind, travelling south through the Canterbury Plains. We’ll stop for lunch near the stunning turquoise waters of Lake Tekapo before continuing to Mt Gerald Station.
This afternoon we begin our first hike, crossing rolling tussock country to Rex Simpson Hut. Along the way, enjoy sweeping views across Lake Tekapo and the surrounding high country.
Tonight we settle into our private alpine hut for a true backcountry experience. While our guides prepare dinner, relax and soak up the peaceful mountain setting before looking skyward. Located within the Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, this is one of the world's best places for stargazing.

After breakfast, we set out from the hut, climbing steadily onto a broad alpine ridge where spectacular views unfold across Lake Tekapo, the Southern Alps and, on a clear day, the imposing eastern faces of Aoraki/Mt Cook and Mt Tasman.
Those feeling strong can continue to the summit of Beuzenberg Peak (2,070m), where the panoramic views are well worth the effort. After a rewarding day on the trail, we return to the hut to relax, enjoy another hearty dinner prepared by our guides and, weather permitting, another spectacular Mackenzie Country sunset.

We bid farewell to Rex Simpson Hut and hike back to the trailhead before returning by vehicle to Lake Tekapo for a coffee and lunch. From there, we continue into Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park, home to New Zealand's highest peak.
This afternoon we'll stretch our legs on one of the park's spectacular walking trails, with our guides choosing the best option based on the weather and the group. It may be the iconic Hooker Valley Track, with its swing bridges and glacial lake views, or the climb to Red Tarns for breathtaking panoramas across the Hooker and Tasman Valleys.
Tonight we'll settle into our accommodation in Aoraki / Mt Cook Village.

Today is one of the highlights of our adventure as we explore more of the spectacular Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park. Our walk climbs steadily to Sealy Tarns before continuing above the alpine scrub through rocky terrain and boulder fields towards Mueller Hut (up to 8 hours).
The effort is richly rewarded with breathtaking views of Aoraki / Mt Cook, Mt Sefton, the Mueller Glacier and the surrounding Southern Alps. Perched at nearly 1,800 metres, Mueller Hut is the perfect place to pause for lunch while soaking up an unforgettable 360-degree alpine panorama.
After descending back to the village, we enjoy a second evening surrounded by New Zealand's highest peaks

We then travel south through the Mackenzie Country, crossing the Lindis Pass on our way to the beautiful lakeside town of Wānaka.
After several rewarding days on the trails, the afternoon is yours to enjoy. Wander the lakefront, browse the local shops and cafés, or, if you're keen to keep exploring, head out on one of the nearby walking trails before settling in for the evening.

The following is not included in the cost of the tour:
If you’re travelling solo not to worry, you’re in good company! Many of our travellers join solo and our trips are designed to feel welcoming and supportive from the moment you arrive. It’s a great way to meet like-minded women, and friendships often form quickly along the way.
When on the tour, we have you sharing with different women from the group at different times - great for group bonding and also for alleviating any potential annoyances that may occur as a result of travelling with the same person throughout a tour. Or, if you’d prefer your own room for five nights of the trip, this is available for an additional supplement (subject to availability; single not available for the 2 nights at Rex Simpson Hut). You can select this option at the time of booking.
Your main luggage will be transferred between accommodations throughout the trip, so on most days you'll only need to carry a daypack with essentials such as water, lunch, extra clothing and personal items.
The exception is our two-night stay at the alpine hut. On Days 2 and 4, you'll carry a small overnight pack containing everything you'll need for your stay, including clothing, toiletries and any personal items. Your main luggage will be securely stored until you return from the hut.
A full packing list and more details will be provided in the lead up to the trip.
The trip starts in Christchurch and ends in Queenstown.
There are direct flights to Christchurch from several Australian cities, including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. At the end of the tour, Queenstown Airport offers direct services to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as convenient connections to other Australian cities via Auckland or Christchurch.
All AW trips are accompanied by one of our experienced Tour Leaders. Their role is to take the hassle out of your travels and help you get the most out of your experience, while embracing the Adventurous Women way.
Throughout the trekking portion of the trip, you'll also be accompanied by experienced hiking guides who will support you on the trails as well prepare some meals.
We do our best to accommodate dietary requirements and food allergies wherever possible. Please ensure any dietary requirements are advised in advance so we can confirm what can be accommodated and let you know of any limitations before you travel.
We'll spend five nights in hotels and lodges. For the two nights at Rex Simpson Hut, a remote backcountry hut with bunk beds in dormitory-style rooms with basic bathroom facilities.
The tour price is based on twin-share rooms for 5 nights plus 2 nights in the hut. If you prefer your own room, a partial single supplement is available for the hotel nights, subject to availability.
A private, air conditioned bus is provided for our transfers.
A trip is an investment and as with any investment, you should take steps to protect it and plan for contingencies.
Travel insurance on domestic tours with Adventurous Women is not mandatory. It is, however, highly recommended, particularly because most policies allow you to add cover for trip cancellation, disruption and curtailment.
In the event of illness or injury, your private health insurance or Medicare will generally cover your medical treatment if you need to visit the hospital.
What your private health insurance may not cover is ambulance costs, which can be significant. Some states offer affordable ambulance membership schemes. Unless you are a Queensland resident (who receives free ambulance cover Australia-wide), you might wish to look at options available to you.
If you are looking for a recommendation, we suggest Go Insurance. Through a partnership with this insurer AW guests receive a 10% discount off the cost of insurance using this link (discount will be applied at checkout)
