Overview

Explore New Zealand's Southern Alps

Experience New Zealand's Southern Alps at their very best, from turquoise lakes and towering peaks to glacial valleys and charming towns. This adventure is built around rewarding treks, climbing to heights of nearly 2,000 metres where breathtaking alpine landscapes await.

Designed for women who enjoy a good challenge, this itinerary blends two worlds: remote alpine huts and demanding hikes, paired with comfortable stays in New Zealand's most beautiful settings.

We begin with two nights in a private alpine hut overlooking Lake Tekapo, waking to sweeping mountain views and falling asleep beneath some of the world's clearest skies. From there, we explore the dramatic landscapes of Aoraki / Mt Cook National Park, spend time in the lakeside town of Wānaka and take on iconic hikes including Mueller Hut and Ben Lomond.

With experienced guides and a group of like-minded women alongside you, every day brings spectacular scenery, shared achievement and adventure in some of New Zealand's most remarkable mountain landscapes.

Note: This trip pairs with our Abel Tasman Pack-Free Hiking trip starting on 01 December from Nelson, New Zealand.

Fitness/Walk Grade

This trip is designed for women with a good level of fitness who enjoy challenging days on the trail. Expect hikes of up to 6-8 hours, with steep climbs, uneven alpine terrain and consecutive days on the trail as well as two nights in simple accommodation. Advanced training is required to build up the necessary stamina.

While you won't carry your main luggage on your back, you'll need to carry a daypack each day, and on days 2 & 4 you'll also carry your overnight gear, including clothing, toiletries and other essentials for your stay in the alpine hut.

Solo Travellers

If you’re travelling solo not to worry, you’re in good company! Many of our travellers join solo and our trips are designed to feel welcoming and supportive from the moment you arrive. It’s a great way to meet like-minded women, and friendships often form quickly along the way.

When on the tour, we have you sharing with different women from the group at different times - great for group bonding and also for alleviating any potential annoyances that may occur as a result of travelling with the same person throughout a tour. Or, if you’d prefer your own room for five nights of the trip, this is available for an additional supplement (subject to availability; single not available for the 2 nights at Rex Simpson Hut).  You can select this option at the time of booking.

What do I need to carry on the trail?

Your main luggage will be transferred between accommodations throughout the trip, so on most days you'll only need to carry a daypack with essentials such as water, lunch, extra clothing and personal items.

The exception is our two-night stay at the alpine hut. On Days 2 and 4, you'll carry a small overnight pack containing everything you'll need for your stay, including clothing, toiletries and any personal items. Your main luggage will be securely stored until you return from the hut.
A full packing list and more details will be provided in the lead up to the trip.

Arrival & Departure Details

The trip starts in Christchurch and ends in Queenstown.

There are direct flights to Christchurch from several Australian cities, including Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. At the end of the tour, Queenstown Airport offers direct services to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, as well as convenient connections to other Australian cities via Auckland or Christchurch.

Who will be leading the trip?

All AW trips are accompanied by one of our experienced Tour Leaders. Their role is to take the hassle out of your travels and help you get the most out of your experience, while embracing the Adventurous Women way.

Throughout the trekking portion of the trip, you'll also be accompanied by experienced hiking guides who will support you on the trails as well prepare some meals.

Do you accommodate dietary requirements?

We do our best to accommodate dietary requirements and food allergies wherever possible. Please ensure any dietary requirements are advised in advance so we can confirm what can be accommodated and let you know of any limitations before you travel.

Accommodation

We'll spend five nights in hotels and lodges.  For the two nights at Rex Simpson Hut, a remote backcountry hut with bunk beds in dormitory-style rooms with basic bathroom facilities.

The tour price is based on twin-share rooms for 5 nights plus 2 nights in the hut. If you prefer your own room, a partial single supplement is available for the hotel nights, subject to availability.

How will we be travelling?

A private, air conditioned bus is provided for our transfers.

Is travel insurance required?

A trip is an investment and as with any investment, you should take steps to protect it and plan for contingencies.

Travel insurance on domestic tours with Adventurous Women is not mandatory. It is, however, highly recommended, particularly because most policies allow you to add cover for trip cancellation, disruption and curtailment.

In the event of illness or injury, your private health insurance or Medicare will generally cover your medical treatment if you need to visit the hospital.

What your private health insurance may not cover is ambulance costs, which can be significant. Some states offer affordable ambulance membership schemes. Unless you are a Queensland resident (who receives free ambulance cover Australia-wide), you might wish to look at options available to you.

If you are looking for a recommendation, we suggest Go Insurance. Through a partnership with this insurer AW guests receive a 10% discount off the cost of insurance using this link (discount will be applied at checkout)
