Why Travel Insurance Matters: Protecting Your Investment in Adventure
Travel is one of the most rewarding investments you can make. Whether a long international trip or a short weekend away closer to home, every journey involves time, money and planning. And like any investment, it makes sense to protect it.
At Adventurous Women, we consider travel insurance a key part of travelling responsibly and confidently.
The reality is that even the best-planned trips can be affected by unexpected events, such as illness, injury, lost luggage, flight disruptions or family emergencies back home. Travel insurance helps provide financial protection and peace of mind when the unexpected happens.
While there are a long list of covered events, travel insurance provides protection in two key areas that are commonly claimed on:
-
Medical and emergency assistance
-
Trip disruption, cancellation and curtailment
Understanding both is important when choosing the right level of cover for your trip.

Medical & Emergency Coverage (International travel)
This is often the most critical component of travel insurance, particularly for international travel.
If you become ill, injured, or involved in an accident while travelling, travel insurance can help cover overseas medical treatment, hospital stays, emergency evacuation, repatriation back to Australia and more.
Medical emergencies overseas can be extremely expensive. In remote or adventure destinations, emergency evacuations alone can cost tens, or even hundreds, of thousands of dollars.
For this reason, Adventurous Women requires all travellers on international tours to hold travel insurance that includes medical cover and emergency evacuation.
Trip Disruption, Cancellation & Curtailment
The second major benefit of travel insurance is protecting the financial investment you’ve made in your trip.
Even carefully planned holidays can be disrupted by unexpected events such as injury or illness before departure, family emergencies, flight cancellations or other unforeseen personal circumstances.
Without insurance, you may lose non-refundable flights, accommodation, tours and deposits.
This is where cancellation, disruption and curtailment cover becomes particularly valuable. Depending on your policy, it may help cover cancelling your trip before departure, returning home early due to an emergency or other additional expenses caused by travel disruptions.
For many travellers, this type of cover can be just as important as medical protection particularly for trips booked well in advance or involving significant upfront costs.

Travel Insurance for Domestic Travel in Australia
Travel insurance on domestic tours with Adventurous Women is not mandatory. It is, however, highly recommended particularly because many policies allow you to add cover for trip cancellation, disruption and curtailment.
Many travellers assume domestic insurance isn’t necessary because Medicare or private health insurance may cover medical treatment within Australia. While this is generally true for hospital and medical care, there can still be significant costs associated with disrupted travel plans.
Ambulance & Evacuation
In the event of illness or injury, your private health insurance or Medicare will generally cover your medical treatment if you need to visit the hospital. However, what your private health insurance may not cover and most travel insurance policies do not cover, is ambulance or evacuation costs, which can be significant.
Some states (like South Australia and Victoria) offer affordable ambulance membership schemes and Queensland provides free ambulance cover Australia-wide. Unless you are a Queensland resident, it may be worth exploring the ambulance cover options available to you either through a state membership scheme or through an upgraded private health policy.
Important Note on Medical & Hospital Treatment on Domestic Tours
Most if not all travel insurance policies do not provide medical or hospital cover in Australia. This is mainly due to the cover that is already provided by Medicare and private health insurance.
