Overview

Explore Sydney Habour with AW

Explore Sydney Harbour on this memorable pack-free hiking journey, experiencing one of the world’s most iconic cities on foot. Hidden bush tracks, quiet coves, and dramatic cliff lines gradually reveal a side of Sydney most visitors never see. From leafy harbourside suburbs and secret gardens to coastal viewpoint, each day brings a new discovery. And, with a single hotel base for the entire trip, you can unpack once and settle in, making the experience feel relaxed and unhurried from the start.

Designed for adventurous women who love walking, this trip blends time in nature with the character and history of the harbour itself. There’s space to slow down, take in the views, and enjoy the rhythm of walking together, with plenty of moments to pause, swim, and connect along the way. It’s an immersive, active escape that ends with a deeper experience of Sydney.

Note: This trip pairs with our Blue Mountains Pack-Free Hiking trip starting on 11 April from Sydney.

Fitness/Walk Grade

This trip includes consecutive days of hiking, with distances of up to 13km per day To help you fully enjoy every moment of the trip, we recommend a good base level of fitness and comfort with walking for full days across multiple consecutive days. You don’t need to be a seasoned hiker, but you should allow time to prepare and build your stamina beforehand.

Focus on being able to comfortably walk for a full day, and then repeat that effort on back-to-back days. This is often where the challenge lies, as the cumulative effect of several days of walking can feel more demanding if your body isn’t used to it.

Day-by-day

Daily itinerary

Day 1 Tues 06 Apr Arrival in Sydney; North Harbour Hiking (9km)

We’ll meet at 1pm for a trip briefing and introduction to your hike leaders and fellow travellers. Then we set off on our Sydney adventure, with an introductory walk to the harbour and its many hidden secrets.

The walk starts among grand 1900s-era houses and stately mansions, their manicured gardens and classic architecture setting the tone. Soon, the track dips into gullies filled with tree ferns and towering Morton Bay figs, creating a lush, hidden-world feel.

Emerging back to the foreshore, enjoy harbour views dotted with small yachts and framed by magnificent stands of Sydney Red Gums.  The walk builds to a grand finale:  epic, iconic views across the water to the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

After this amazing walking welcome to Sydney, we’ll head back to the hotel to freshen up then regroup for dinner.

Distances: appx 9 km

Meals: Dinner

Accommodation:  Hotel, Sydney

Day 2 Wed 07 Apr Hike Sydney’s South Harbour secrets (13 km)

Today blends Sydney glamour with coastal wilderness. Begin with a walk toward the coast, passing through luxury suburbs, where leafy streets and waterfront mansions set the tone with occasional peeks of the harbour.

The path soon transitions into bushland as we enter Sydney Harbour National Park. The trail hugs sandstone cliffs with sweeping views back across the harbour. If time and weather allow, stop at a netted harbour beach for a refreshing swim.

By midday, arrive in Watsons Bay for lunch and a chance to soak up the laid-back coastal atmosphere.

In the afternoon, continue on foot to the dramatic cliffs of The Gap, where crashing Pacific waves and endless ocean views create a powerful finale. End the day with a scenic ferry ride back to the city.

Distances: appx 13 km

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation:  Hotel, Sydney

Day 3 Thur 08 Apr Hike Sydney’s West Harbour and Hidden Places (10 km)

Today’s hike uncovers Sydney’s hidden contrasts:  reclaimed industrial zones turned into green, wildlife-friendly spaces, all set against near-constant views of the city skyline. There’s a wonderful ‘so close yet so far’ feeling as the harbour separates us from the city’s glittering core.

Along the way, wander through Wendy Whiteley's Secret Garden, a whimsical oasis tucked above the water.

The finale is unforgettable: walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. At the South Pylon, climb 200 steps to the top for sweeping harbour, city and bridge views, plus a delightful museum focused on its construction. Those who prefer can wait below or return to the hotel nearby.

Distances: appx 10 km

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Accommodation: Hotel, Sydney

Day 4 Fri 09 Apr Hike the wild side: Middle Harbour and Manly (10 km)

Today is the wildest and most classically Australian of the four walks: a true bushwalk blending cliffs, beaches and sweeping coastal scenery.

The trail winds through native seaside heathland alive with birds and seasonal wildflowers, before opening to elevated lookouts with expansive views over Middle Harbour. Along the way, pause at secluded beaches and turquoise coves - perfect spots to rest, swim or simply soak in the natural beauty.

The walk gradually leads you into lively Manly, where cafés and ocean breezes signal a celebratory finish. From here, board the iconic Manly ferry for a spectacular ride back across the harbour.
We’ll gather this evening for a final group dinner, to reflect on our Sydney hikes and toast future adventures.

Solo Travellers

Arrival & Departure Details

The tour begins on 4 April at 1:00pm at our centrally-located Sydney hotel, where we’ll set off on our first walk together. We recommend arriving in Sydney on a morning flight on this day, allowing enough time to travel into the city and freshen up before the tour starts.

The tour ends on 10 April, with no scheduled activities on this day. You’re free to depart at any time that suits your travel plans.

Who will be leading the trip?

All AW trips are accompanied by one of our experienced Tour Leaders. Their role is to take the hassle out of your travels and help you get the most out of your experience, while embracing the Adventurous Women way.

On this trip, you’ll also be joined by Sydney-based walking guides who will share local insights, hidden gems and interesting stories about the places you visit along the way.

What should I bring?

A detailed packing list will be provided closer to the tour date. The most important item is a comfortable, well-broken-in pair of walking shoes or boots. You’ll also need a small day pack to carry water, layers and snacks while walking.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

Our meals will be prepared each day in house by professional chefs, with a focus on healthy and fresh. Alcohol or drinks with meals are not included except tea/coffee & juice with breakfast.

If you have any dietary requirements or allergies, we’ll do our best to accommodate them. Please provide as much detail as possible in advance so we can advise what level of catering is possible. In some cases, we may recommend bringing additional snacks, and for severe allergies, we’ll discuss any necessary medical precautions prior to the trip.

Accommodation
What does pack-free hiking mean?

It’s a multi-day hiking experience where you carry only a light day pack on the trail rather than a full pack with camping gear, cooking supplies and overnight supplies. Your day pack should have space to carry 2 litres of water, a packed lunch and a layer or two of clothes or sun protection, depending on the weather!

Another benefit of pack-free hiking: Instead of sleeping on the trail,  you return each evening to comfortable accommodation in Sydney, allowing you to explore a region in depth without regularly packing up and moving.

How will we be travelling?

We will travel by private bus or van for the trip.

Is travel insurance required?

A trip is an investment and as with any investment, you should take steps to protect it and plan for contingencies.

Travel insurance on domestic tours with Adventurous Women is not mandatory. It is, however, highly recommended, particularly because most policies allow you to add cover for trip cancellation, disruption and curtailment.

In the event of illness or injury, your private health insurance or Medicare will generally cover your medical treatment if you need to visit the hospital.

What your private health insurance may not cover is ambulance costs, which can be significant. Some states offer affordable ambulance membership schemes. Unless you are a Queensland resident (who receives free ambulance cover Australia-wide), you might wish to look at options available to you.

If you are looking for a recommendation, we suggest Go Insurance. Through a partnership with this insurer AW guests receive a 10% discount off the cost of insurance using this link (discount will be applied at checkout).
