Overview

Explore Cassowary Coast with AW

Set in one of the world’s premier sea kayaking destinations, our six-day Cassowary Coast Kayaking Basecamp Adventure is a chance to experience Australia’s spectacular tropical coastline from the water. Staying at an island basecamp for three nights, you’ll have time to settle in, switch off and enjoy this extraordinary island environment.

With expert guidance and the camaraderie of a supportive all-women group, you’ll build your kayaking skills and confidence throughout the trip. Paddle through crystal-clear waters framed by dramatic peaks, pristine beaches and lush rainforest, with opportunities to spot marine life and discover just how much you can do on the water.

Rather than packing up and moving each day, we’ll make the most of our beautiful basecamp, with our activities shaped by the weather, tides and water conditions. Days might include kayaking, beach exploration and a hike to the summit of Mount Kootaloo, where sweeping views across the Family Islands and mainland coastline reward the climb.

Spend three nights immersed in this remote tropical setting, with your own tent, good campsite facilities and delicious freshly prepared meals each day. With time to learn, explore and enjoy the slower pace of island life, this is a memorable way to improve your kayaking while experiencing the magic of the Family Islands alongside a supportive group of like-minded women.

Fitness/Walk Grade

This trip involves around 2-5 hours of kayaking each day, along with active time loading and unloading the kayaks. Some days may be more strenuous depending on weather and water conditions. The more you prepare, the more you’ll get out of the experience, and we’ll share tips to help you build your endurance and upper-body strength before the trip.

Previous open-sea kayaking experience isn’t required and personal flotation devices are provided, but you must be able to swim and feel confident in open water.

There are also opportunities for hikes of up to 7km. These are non-technical trails but include some steep inclines, so if you’d like to take part, we recommend including some hill training in your preparation.

On arrival in Mission Beach, we’ll check in to our accommodation and have some time to freshen up. Later, we’ll gather for a trip briefing, followed by a welcome dinner to kick off our adventure together.

Day 2 Mon 09 Aug Cassowary Coast: Kayak and Camp

It’s an early start this morning with a 7:00AM pick-up and short transfer to our launch site. After breakfast, we set off to sea, hopping in our two-person sea kayaks and paddling toward Dunk Island.

We kayak approximately 5-6 km across warm tropical waters of the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. It’s not uncommon to spot turtles, rays or seabirds along the way.

On arrival, we unload and set up our basecamp for the next three nights. Everyone chips in carrying gear and pitching tents. After lunch, there’s time to explore, swim, relax in hammocks or read. As the sun sets behind island peaks, we’ll enjoy dinner under the stars.

Important note: All distances and timings in the itinerary are approximate and may vary depending on weather and sea conditions. Our experienced local guides know this coastline intimately and will adjust the route and pace to ensure both safety and maximum enjoyment.

Distances: appx 6 km

Day 3 Tue 10 Aug Cassowary Coast: Kayak, Hike and Camp

With two full days at basecamp, we’ll keep the itinerary flexible and shape each day around the weather, tides, currents, water conditions and the group’s energy levels.

A typical day might start with breakfast followed by kayaking skills training and time on the water. We’ll also have time to explore the beaches and coastline around camp, and fit in our hike up Mount Kootaloo, following the 7km return trail to the summit (approximately 2-3 hours). The climb rewards us with sweeping views across the Family Islands and mainland coastline.

Exactly when we kayak, hike and explore will depend on conditions, but expect active days, plenty of time outdoors and a little tropical flexibility!

In the evening, we’ll return to our comfortable basecamp for a delicious dinner and a well-earned rest.

Day 4 Wed 11 Aug Cassowary Coast: Kayak, Hike and Camp

Another day to explore and enjoy our tropical surroundings, with the day’s activities again shaped by the weather, water conditions, tides and the group’s energy levels.

We’ll make the most of our time at basecamp, with more kayaking, beach time and opportunities to explore depending on the conditions. There’s no rigid schedule; we’ll work with Mother Nature to make the most of the day.

Another delicious dinner at basecamp rounds out our final night in the tropics.

After an early breakfast, we check out of the motel and drive back to Cairns Airport where we say goodbye.

Important Notes

This is a remote tropical adventure, so flexibility is an important part of the experience. The activities and order of the itinerary may change depending on weather, tides, currents, water conditions and the energy levels of the group. In particular, our kayaking and hiking activities may be moved between days or adjusted to make the most of the conditions.

We’ll always aim to make the most of our time at basecamp, but Mother Nature has the final say! A flexible and easy-going attitude is essential for enjoying this adventure.

Arrival & Departure Details

The tour begins in Cairns airport at 1:00 pm on 08 August. Please book a flight landing at 12.30pm or earlier.  We will be heading straight to Mission Beach from the airport. (If arriving the night before, we’ll make a second pick up around 2pm at a central meeting point in Cairns)

Who will be leading the trip?

All AW tours are accompanied by one of our experienced Tour Leaders. Their role is to take the hassle out of your travels and help you get the most out of your experience, while embracing the Adventurous Women way.

On this tour, you’ll also be joined by experienced, professional kayaking guides. They are not only extremely knowledgeable about kayaking but also about nature and wildlife.  They will also be preparing meals and assisting with camp set up.

Do you accommodate dietary requirements?

We do our best to accommodate dietary requirements and food allergies on every tour.

As we will be spending three nights camping, ingredients for meals are purchased and portioned in advance. We're committed to meeting dietary needs wherever possible, but it's important that any requirements are communicated accurately at the time of booking.  If you request a specific diet (e.g. vegetarian, gluten-free) but then choose not to follow it during the trip, it can lead to unnecessary waste and may also mean that other guests have less food available to them. We appreciate your help in planning responsibly so we can cater fairly and effectively for everyone.

Accommodation

We’ll stay two nights in a comfortable motel in Mission Beach. In between,  there will be three nights camping on the beach.

The camping set-up is comfortable: single tents with premium thermarest sleeping mats, pillows, camp chairs and toilet and shower facilities nearby.

Do I need to be an experienced kayaker?

While no prior sea-kayaking experience is required to join this trip, it is mandatory that you are able to swim and are comfortable in open water.

To help you fully enjoy every moment of our upcoming trip, we recommend that you have a good base level of fitness, meaning you are comfortable being active 4-6 hours per day across multiple days. The more prepared you are, the more comfortable and enjoyable your experience will be.

Is travel insurance required?

A trip is an investment and as with any investment, you should take steps to protect it and plan for contingencies.

Travel insurance is not mandatory for domestic tours with Adventurous Women. It is, however, highly recommended, particularly because most policies allow you to add cover for trip cancellation, disruption and curtailment.

In the event of illness or injury, your private health insurance or Medicare will generally cover your medical treatment if you need to visit the hospital.

What your private health insurance may not cover is ambulance costs, which can be significant. Some states offer affordable ambulance membership schemes. Unless you are a Queensland resident (who receives free ambulance cover Australia-wide), you might wish to look at options available to you.

If you are looking for a recommendation, we suggest Go Insurance. Through an affiliation with this insurer, AW receives a financial benefit. As a way of passing value back to our guests, if you purchase a policy for an AW trip through Go Insurance using this link, you will receive a 10% discount on the premium.
