Overview

Explore Sri Lanka with AW

Discover the many faces of Sri Lanka. Over two unforgettable weeks,  journey from the tropical coast, up to the misty tea highlands and back to the shores of the Indian Ocean.

Along the way, explore ancient ruins and sacred temples, climb the iconic Sigiriya Rock Fortress and venture into national parks in search of elephants and elusive leopards. Then head for higher ground: hike through lush tea country along the Pekoe Trail, ride the legendary hill-country train and discover waterfalls, mountain viewpoints and charming villages as the landscape unfolds.

But it’s the people who make this adventure so memorable. Meet local families, learn to cook traditional Sri Lankan dishes, taste tea straight from the source and share meals in local homes- the kind of moments that don’t make it into guidebooks.

This is a journey that connects culture, nature and adventure, giving you the chance to experience Sri Lanka in a truly authentic way.

Fitness/Walk Grade

This is an active trip and a reasonable level of fitness is recommended to get the most out of the experience. The itinerary includes four hikes, including two consecutive days walking 10–15km and lots of stairs. While the pace is relaxed and supportive, we recommend training in advance to build your stamina and break in your hiking shoes and daypack.

The trip also includes cycling and kayaking activities, both of which are beginner-friendly.

Solo Travellers

If you’re travelling solo not to worry, you’re in good company! Many of our travellers join solo and our trips are designed to feel welcoming and supportive from the moment you arrive. It’s a great way to meet like-minded women, and friendships often form quickly along the way.

When on tour, we have you sharing with different women from the group at different times - great for group bonding and also for alleviating any potential annoyances that may occur as a result of travelling with the same person throughout a tour.

Or, if you’d prefer your own room, this option is available for an additional supplement (subject to availability).  You can select your rooming preference at the time of booking or reach out to us for more information.

Arrival & Departure Details

The tour begins in Negombo on 10 September, with a group meeting at 5:30pm at the hotel. The journey concludes in Galle on 23 September, following breakfast.

Sri Lanka’s main international airport is Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), located approximately 20 minutes’ drive from Negombo and around 2 hours from Galle.

Who will be leading the trip?

All AW trips are accompanied by one of our experienced Tour Leaders. Their role is to take the hassle out of your travels and help you get the most out of your experience, while embracing the Adventurous Women way.

You’ll also be joined by a Sri Lankan tour guide who will share local insights, hidden gems and interesting stories about the places you visit along the way. Local specialist guides may also be included for specific site visits.

What if I have dietary restrictions?

We do our best to accommodate dietary requirements and food allergies on every tour.

Please provide as much detail as possible in advance so we can advise what level of catering is possible. In some cases, we may recommend bringing additional snacks, and for severe allergies, we’ll discuss any necessary medical precautions prior to the trip.

Accommodation

We’ll stay in a mix of hotels and guesthouses throughout the trip. In smaller towns, some properties may be simpler in style, but all rooms include ensuite bathrooms with hot showers, and accommodation is twin-share with a maximum of two people per room.

How will we be travelling?

We will travel in a private bus for most of the trip. While on safari, we will be  in open-air jeeps   And one highlight of the journey will be a train ride of approximately 3-4 hours, offering a memorable way to experience the countryside.

While roads in Sri Lanka are generally in good condition, travel times can sometimes be longer than expected due to local conditions. If you are prone to motion sickness, we recommend bringing appropriate medication from home.

Is travel insurance required?

Travel insurance is mandatory for AW's international trips. We recommend taking out a policy early. Most good travel insurance policies offer an upgrade option to cover trip cancellation and interruption, which can come in handy.

If you are looking for a recommendation, we suggest Go Insurance. Through an affiliation with this insurer, AW receives a financial benefit. As a way of passing value back to our guests, if you purchase a policy for an AW trip through Go Insurance using this link, you may be eligible for our rebate offer. You can learn more about this offer by clicking here.
