This is a very popular tour, giving you an excellent feel for the Great Ocean Walk, including plenty of walking, exploring beaches, hidden coves and cliff line vista's. We spend our three nights staying at the Cape Otway Lightstation, where your guides are able to prepare all meals. There is always a welcome cuppa on hand and you’ll see the best sunset found anywhere along the Great Ocean Road.
From 8.00am onwards you'll find the coach and two guides (1 from Park Trek & 1 from Adventurous Women ® ™) waiting for you, outside the National Gallery of Victoria on St Kilda Road. We aim to depart from here by 8.15am. Our first port of call is a small country village where the local café will have plenty of hot draughts of tea, coffee and fresh scones ready to be served, enough to satisfy any morning cravings and set you up for a great day ahead. Then we depart with our lunches sorted and head for the start very start of the Great Ocean Walk at Marengo where the walk takes us through to the lovely surrounds of Elliot River. Exposed headlands, wild beaches and lush rainforest are all part of this first section and a great introduction to what you can expect over the next few days.
We plan to arrive into the Cape Otway Light Station shortly before 5.00pm. The accommodation arrangements here are typically twin share and bathroom amenities are shared. The Cape Otway Light Station occupies the most spectacular setting along the entire Great Ocean Road. This historic location is simply the best you’ll find along Victoria’s coast with superb views as well as being the most beautiful place for a sunrise and a sunset. Once we have you settled it’s time for us to get the evening meal under way while you enjoy a glass of wine and a market sourced platter of nibbles.
This morning we take off along the Great Ocean Walk from our front door and out to the cliff lines of Station Beach. The views here are superb and this section of the walk is all recently constructed and surprisingly gentle. The locals call this section a walk on the "mild" side. We lunch at the campground along the Aire River where you’ll find toilets and a lovely tidal river with the green rolling hills of the Otways as our backdrop. You do have the option of foregoing the after lunch section of the walk if you feel you've walked far enough. We can drive you back to our place of stay if you prefer instead to put your feet up and relax.
After lunch it’s a delightful continuation of the cliff line walking as we complete the final short section of today’s walk taking us under the wind chiselled cliffs at Castle Cove where we reconvene with the coach. Time to return to our abode at Cape Otway Light Station.
Today’s walking is the highlight of the Great Ocean Walk. Starting from Milanesia Beach the walk takes us to Ryans Den for lunch where the views are simply the grandest on the entire walk. This section of the walk is described locally as a walk on the "wild" side. You’ll be full of praise for the work done by the track makers as they have opened up one of the most amazing lengths of coastline. While the walking is more challenging than previously encountered you’ll be filled with the best memories, as the views are simply amazing. After lunch we trek onwards to Moonlight Head where the coach awaits to take us, time permitting, to the expansive views from The Gables. You also have the option of adding another four kilometres to the days journey if you decide to trek a new section of track that links Moonlight Head with the Gables.
Time perhaps for a cuppa at the Lavers Hill Tea Rooms (OE) before we arrive back to our abode for a final night barbecue and high spirits.
You do have the option of foregoing the walk after lunch as one of the Park Trek guides can "drop - in" on the walk and pluck out anyone who feels they've had enough prior to lunch.
This evening as your meal sizzles on the BBQ you may care to sit out on the front lawn watching the sun setting.
It’s time to round off the trip with a sensational walk so that you return to Melbourne later this evening with a satisfied smile. Our day starts with a new section of the Great Ocean walk that starts from Princetown and follows the cliff lines that eventually takes us on to the final section of the Great Ocean Walk finishing at the iconic Twelve Apostles. You'll love this section of the walk as it is of an easy to moderate nature, allowing you to soak up the views of the surging Southern Ocean and finishing at the world famous Twelve Apostles.
We finish with a coffee in Colac (OE) and a 5.30pm return to Melbourne.
