birds walk

If you're just getting into (or back into) walking or looking for a more social experience this is the walk for you.

Grab your comfy walking shoes girls and join some AWesome Women on a gentle meander along a 6km easy loop pathway that weaves its way around the perimeter of Bibra Lake.

Bibra Lake is an internationally recognised birding hotspot. Long regarded as one of Perth's southern suburbs favourite destinations, it's home to more than 220 plant species and 123 bird species including the endangered Carnaby's Cockatoo and Peregrine Falcon. The wetland habitat is also home to a myriad of other species including bandicoots, quenda's, several species of bats, brush tailed possums and dozens of reptiles and amphibians including 9 species of frogs!

On our walk we will explore the amazing lakeside habitats, take a peek through the bird hides and the visit the Narma Kullarck Boardwalk, a local Noongar peoples phrase that means 'family place'. As we reach the boardwalk - you will first notice that combined with the bird hide its shape is reminiscent of the long neck and shell of our endearing oblong turtle that are native inhabitants here. Stepping onto the floating boardwalk after the winter rain is like the sensation of walking on water - feeling the gentle swell and sway of the wetlands lapping while the floating pontoons afford a surreal view – tucked away in a thicket and emerging at the bird hide deep within Bibra Lake.

As we leave the boardwalk and walk along the lakeside the wild life is still abundant with gorgeous little Superb Fairy wrens / Blue wrens flitting around the shoreline while hundreds of ducks paddle just off shore and the purple swamp hens forage in the reeds nearby.

After our walk, relax a while with your AW Host and enjoy the views. Bring along your own lunch or you can grab a bite to eat at the food van located within the car park that serves snacks, ice creams, tea and coffee is parked outside the southern entry to the playground near the toilet facility and open 9-3pm every day.
