AW QLD is taking on another section of Australia's longest recreational rail trail - The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail (BVRT). On this adventure we will be stepping back in time as we journey along the 15kms section between Harlin and Toogoolawah.
We will meet up in Toogoolawah where we will transport you to Harlin to begin our adventure. Harlin is located on the Brisbane Valley Highway and provides a great access point for us to start our adventure.
There is only one tunnel along the BVRT and it is along this section. The heritage listed Yimbun Tunnel was built in 1909 and remains a hidden treasure. As we pass along the dark and cool 100 metre tunnel that cuts through the centre of a mountain, it is still possible to see soot marks on the roof - a reminder of the steam engines that once chugged along the line all those years ago. There are also several beautifully preserved old wooden bridges along this section of the BVRT. Make sure you bring your camera and there are plenty of photo opportunities here.
Although this section of the BVRT is relatively flat, it will be a long day so we will need to pace ourselves. We will be serving morning tea with something sweet along the trail so we can sit and take in our surroundings. It isn’t often we get to sit and enjoy wide open spaces.
As the day unfolds and we move further down the trail, we pass through farming communities and even past the airstrip used by the Skydive Ramblers just before the township of Toogoolawah. It is a great feeling standing on the trail as the light planes pass overhead landing and taking off. They are so close you can see the pilot smile and wave. 👋
Our journey winds up back in Toogoolawah. Another day spent chasing the history of the Brisbane Valley.
Please Note: A medium to high level of fitness is required for those who want to take this on. There are no water stops, toilet facilities or shops along the trail, so it is important that you are carrying at least 2-3 litres of water, snacks and lunch.
