This is a gorgeous 11km hike, but don't be fooled by the relatively short distance as it can be quite challenging with a number of steep gravel ascents & descents.
We'll be walking in the beautiful Walyunga National Park, and this time of year the it is stunning with spectacular flora and abundant wildflowers within the impressive wandoo and marri woodlands. We are often greeted by cheeky kangaroos and enjoy a myriad of birdlife including black cockatoos, galahs and many of their other friends. If we are lucky we may even spot a wedge-tailed eagle soaring above.
Walyunga is an aboriginal name whose meaning is uncertain but may mean "happy place'. It is a very significant meeting place for the local Noongar people and contains one of the largest known Aboriginal campsites around Perth, which was still used into the late 1900's. In their culture they believe the Swan and Avon rivers were carved out by the Waugal and when they visit the area they always greet the dreamtime rainbow serpent here by rubbing sand on their bodies then throwing it into the river.
Our walk starts with a gentle meander beside the beautifully flowing Avon River to Syd's Rapids after which we leave the river and get our hearts pumping with a wonderful ascent that "keeps on giving" up onto the ridge. But don't worry, we'll have plenty of time to rest as well. From here we are treated to stunning views of the Avon Valley and beyond. We will enjoy our lunch up at Woodsome Hill before commencing the descent back down to the river and our cars.
