MAKE A BOOKING

This is a challenging but beautiful walk along the Southern Branch of Christmas Creek. After crossing Christmas Creek the path hugs the creek with some rock hopping and has rocks and trees to navigate around and over offering great variety.

In 1937 a Stinson Airliner had crashed on a flight from Brisbane. With many people believing the plane had crashed somewhere over New South Wales no search had been conducted in the Lamington Area until Bernard O’Reilly heard the news one week after the crash and set off in search of the crash site based on a hunch.

He found two survivors at the crash site and was told another man, James (Jim) Westray, had also survived and set off down the nearly sheer bluffs to Christmas Creek where his body was found. This moderate hike takes us to the final resting place of Jim Westray. Visiting his grave lets you witness this incredibly rugged country where O'Reilly walked without tracks to rescue the plane crash survivors.

Here will will stop for morning tea (provided) and have plenty of time to explore and learn more of the story of James (Jim) Westray. It is a nice quiet peaceful site under the canopy of the trees alongside the creek.

There are a couple of rock pools in the creek that are suitable for swimming for those a little more adventurous. Remember to bring a towel.

We return along the same track that should take us about 5 hours all up depending on the pace of the group.

Once back we will find a lovely spot on along the creek to have our lunch (not provided).
