Meet at 9am to start our 11.5km hike through lovely bush with lots of Banksias, She-oaks, Snotty Gobbles and Marri Trees.
Stop for morning tea, then push on to the Perth Observatory. After our BYO light lunch, we join the two, successive tours that the Observatory team host.
On our first tour, we will be discovering the Observatory’s rich history and exploring the wonders of the universe. The knowledgeable guides will take you on a journey through time, from the Observatory’s beginnings at Mt Eliza in 1896 to our move to Bickley in 1966 and beyond. You will get to tour the Meridian, Astrograph & Calver Telescopes, learn about timekeeping, and explore the museum to discover fascinating stories about the Observatory’s past and present.
The second tour is concerned with the solar experience and is not to be missed. You will get to see theCollins Sundial and learn about its analemma, view the sun safely through the Coronado Solar Telescope (weather permitting), and discover what causes sunspots and coronal mass ejections, which can cause the auroras on Earth. You will also learn interesting facts about the Sun and space probes that are helping us learn more about it.
We will wrap up by returning to the cars and should be done around 15:30-16:00hrs.
