This 11 kilometre loop trail in Walyunga National Park initially follows the Avon River, passing by Syd's Rapid, before it ascends steeply to the western side of the river.  It passes through marri and wandoo woodland, before offering good views of the Avon Valley from Woodsome Hill.

The track is rocky and involves some steep gravel ascents and descents.   In late winter and spring there are abundant wildflowers. The trail is marked with black footprints and is best walked in an anticlockwise direction. Walyunga National Park covers 1,800 hectares of the Darling Range, tucked behind the Darling Scarp, covering both sides of a steep valley.  Just to the east of the park, in the picturesque Avon Valley, the Avon River joins the Brockman River to form the Swan River which passes through the tree lined valley.Walyunga contains one of the largest known Aboriginal campsites around Perth and was still in use by the Nyoongar people late last century.

The area has been used as a meeting place for more than 6000 years. Walyunga is an Aboriginal name, but its meaning is uncertain.  Local Noongar people believe the Swan River was carved by the Waugal, and greet the dreamtime serpent here by rubbing sand on their bodies and throwing it in the water. The Swan River is the main attraction in the park as it thunders through in winter and meanders by in the drier months, lined with smooth granite boulders.

The Echinda trail starts beside the lower pool in Walyunga and follows the river past Syd's Rapids. It then ascends steeply to Woodsome Hill from where there are excellent views of the Avon Valley.  It passes through heathlands with hakeas, grevilleas, verticordias, hibbertias and triggerplants. Although the animals except for kangaroos are elusive during the day, there is a myriad of birdlife including galahs, parrots, black-faced cuckoo shrikes, thornbills and fantails. The trail is best walked anticlockwise, so as to avoid a slippery and steep descent. Its marker is a black footprint.

Sunday Triple Trail Meander Midland WA

Sun 17th October 2021 | Kay W

This was a lovely triple walk. Each one was easy with nice breaks in between to recover if needed. I absolutely loved the last walk and it’s wonderful cascading waterfalls. Meeting at a designated spot in midland and car pooling was a great idea. And the food that was available at the meeting spot was delicious. No need to pre pack your lunch. Yum…..

And as always Jazzy was full of information about the areas we were visiting.

Another Day on Straddie Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island) QLD

Sun 10th October 2021 | Cass D

Great day, but a very long one. Would have loved to had had a longer walk with BYO lunch at Point Lookout rather than lunch at the pub just because of the time it takes with that many people. Overall fabulous day . Girls always pull out the fantastic goodies for afternoon tea which is so lovely.

This was a great walk - beautiful place to walk. Betty is fantastic - there is never any pressure to try and keep up with the group and so I can walk at my own pace - with Betty keeping a close eye out.

The Highlights of The Bibbulmun Track (Ex Perth) WA

Sue was always at hand when we needed her, and the meals were great. Jazz looked after us all day, and I think I got extra attention because I was old, although I think she will agree that I managed OK. And Leonie was just an extra bonus, especially with her i-phone tips.

Flinders Peak - A Tough Summit Flinders Peak Conservation Park QLD

Flinders Peak has been on my bucket list for a few years now and I am so glad that I have finally reached the summit. It is not an easy hike but it is challenging in that it is mostly uphill with a rocky ridge to walk along and many more rocks to climb. I loved it and would do it again. Thanks AW for hosting a great day out. As usual, your guides are welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful.
